Eritrea, formerly a province of Ethiopia, gained independence in 1993 after a 30 year struggle ending in a referendum which overwhelmingly supported independence.

The note is a 1 Nakfa from 1997 which has three girls on the from and a bush school on the reverse. As far as I can make out there was only this issue of 1, 2, 10, 20 ,50 and 100 Nakfa (1997) and in 2004 they released a 50 and 100 Nakfa note.
