A TOTALLY AMATEUR BANKNOTE COLLECTOR

SOME HELPFUL LINKS

In between Letters , I think I'll add some links on the technical side of collecting banknotes. here I'll look at where to get information about banknotes. there must be hundreds of ways, when it comes to researching banknotes - for me this is the most interesting bit.

I've already referenced the standard catalog of world paper money, which is the main one I use. its published in huge books which are quite expensive but worth the money if you are looking at collecting for a long time. the only criticism is that they are updated fairly regularly but you have to buy the whole book again, which makes it prohibitively expensive to all but the most serious collectors.  so finding a website that can give you up to date info is quite essential.

Banknote news is one that I have found useful for new banknotes you can use it like a news stream for new banknote coming up. You can also use the site to subscribe to the Banknote book which has chapters on most countries to down load on subscription or to buy individual chapters if you are looking at a specific country.

Another source of information is to go to the banks themselves, usually the central bank of the country which may have a news or press release page where you can search for info. You can find a list of banks here .

for basic info on the countries themselves you could start with Wikipedia, which is in different languages but sometimes its worth checking the facts elsewhere to confirm them. A general internet search for the country will give you loads of choice too.

I usually put links to the sites i have used on the pages of the blog so that folks can see where the info came from. there are two reasons for this , 1. the facts  can be checked and 2. someone put a lot of hard work into researching the facts, so a little credit is due to them!! remember most of the stuff on the internet has some copyright attached - usually if its only for your own use it is fine. a basic view of internet copyright is found here .
