This note is the 10 bolivares with Rafael Urdaneta  on the front  and the giant anteater on the reverse with the  Clenaga de Juan Manuel national park in the background.

:This is the 20 bolivares note with Simon Rodreguez on the front and the iconic Jaguar and the Waraira repano national park behind.

This is the 50 bolivares note. the front has Antonio Jose de Sucre, a Venezuelan from a family stretching back to Flanders who, after fighting in the war of independence, went on to be the 2nd president of  Bolivia and then the 4th president of Peru !!  On the reverse there is an ocelot and the Peninsula de Paria national park

ANOTHER VENEZUELAN REVOLUTIONARY

Sorry for the long delay in posting on the blog. I been training for one of my other hobbies - lapidary so the banknotes had to take a backseat for a while.

So here we have a 50 Bolivares from Venezuela. this note is from 1998. The front has the "palacio de Las Acedamias" which is in the middle of Caracas. it was built in 1684 as a convent . it was also an army barracks, a hospital and college before  being given to the university of Caracas in 1876. it also features Andres Bello , a contemporary of Simon Bolivar, who spent 19 years in England as a diplomatic representative of the revolution.
the reverse has the central bank building in Caracas.

VENEZUELAN HERO FRANCISCO DE MIRANDA

Now I like this note, not simply because its from Venezuela - I  was a huge fan of Hugo Chavez - but because they have designed one side in portrait and the reverse in landscape which adds a little bit of  "something extra" to it. the front has a serious looking Francisco de Miranda, a forerunner of Simon Bolivar. Francisco has a connection to Britain too. his house in London has a blue plaque commemorating him. Unusual as Britain is not known for celebrating revolutionaries, South American or otherwise !! The reverse has Orinoco river dolphins and the Medanos de Coro National Park in the background. The note is a 2 Bolivares note, Bolivares are name after Simon Bolivar Above.

VENEZUELA

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is a country in South America with a capital of Caracas . Venezuela was first colonised by Spain in 1522 after fierce fighting with the indigenous peoples. Independence was declared in both 1811 and 1813 but both times the movements were crushed but in 1821 full independence was achieved under the command of Simon Bolivar under the name of Gran Colombia up until 1830 when a bloody rebellion gained independence as Venezuela. The colours of the Venezuelan flag are yellow, blue and red - yellow for the wealth of the land, blue for the wealth of the sea and red for the blood shed in gaining independence.  1998 saw a new Bolivarian revolution sweep Hugo Chavez to the presidency. he died in 2013.

Monetary units;

1 Bolivar = 100 Centimos 1879 - onward

The first of the notes above is the 10000 Bolivares note from 2004 with Antonio Sucre on the front and  the supreme court building on the back.. This note was a present from some american friends who were in Cuba at the same time as me in 2006, for Fidel Castro's 80 th birthday.

the second note above is a 100 Bolivares note from 1992 with a dashing Simon Bolivar on the front and the capitol building on the reverse.

This note is the 1 Bolivar note from the 1989 issue with a bust of Simon Bolivar on the front and the coat of arms on the reverse.

There are plans to introduce a regional currency for members of ALBA, to replace the US dollar as the currency of commerce. up until now it has been a "Virtual Currency" . there are plans for it to become a hard currency in the future. the currency is called the Sucre.
