BRAZILIAN NOTE WITH A RED SPOT

This first note is a 5 Cruzeiros note from 1964 with a portrait of the Baron of Rio Branco with the reverse having a tableau of the conquest on the Amazon tribes.

Its funny how a small thing can catch your interest and this applies to this note. The polymer note has a red circle within the clear window - something I have never seen before. The note itself in a commemorative note issued for the 500th anniversary of the founding of Brazil. the books say the discovery of Brazil but I'm sure the Amazonian tribes had discovered the area long before the Europeans came there !! The front has Pedro Alvares Cabral, the Portuguese explorer who is credited with discovering Brazil and the first man to have set foot on 4 continents. the reverse has portraits of people.

This is a new Brazilian note. Its a 2 Reais note from 2003 with the sculpture of the republic on the front right and Tartaruga Marhina Turtles on the reverse.

BRAZIL

The Federative Republic of Brazil is a south american country. it was a Portuguese territory until 1822, when it became independent, and in 1889 became a republic. the language is still Portuguese and the capital is Brasilia.

Monetary system:

1 cruzeiro+ 100 Centavos  (1942-1967)

1 cruzeiro Novo = 1000 Cruzeiro (1966-1985)

1 cruzado = 1000 cruzeiro Novo (1986-1989)

1 cruzado Novo= 1000 Cruzado (1989 -1990)

1 Cruzeiro = 1 Cruzado Novo (1990- 1993)

1 Cruzeiro real = 1000 Cruzeiro (1993 - 1994)

1 Real = 100 centavos (1994 - onwards)

the two notes above are a 1 and a 2 Cruzeiro note. the Gentlemen with fine facial hair are 1 cruzeiro = M de Tamandare and 2 Cruzeiro = Duke of Caxias . both notes are from 1958

Above we have a one Cruzeiro from 1972 with liberty head on the front and the banco central building on the reverse.

These 3 are wonderful and shows the ingenuity of the artists. these are ambigramatic , ie they look the same if you turn them upside down. I haven't come across any other country that has done this as yet.

the reverse is even more so as they feature . Just look at these!!

Maybe you have to turn them by hand to get the full effect !!!!

This is interesting in that original 1000 Cruzados was issued in 1987 but when they changed in in 1989 they just stamped 1 Cruzado Novo in the wee triangle instead of designing new ones. by the way the guy is Machado de Assis , a brazilian novelist and poet

And finally this note from 1994, 10 Reais (plural of Real), and again the artists and designers have gone a wee bit further by printing the reverse in portrait (vertical ) not landscape which shows off the macaw brilliantly.
