this note is the 50 Dalasi note from The Gambia. Issued in 2019 it follows the trend for purple and unusual blue colours in notes. This note has birds ( possibly ospreys) and the Gambian coat of arms on the front and the standing stones of wassu. The Senegambian stone circles are the largest concentration of stone circles in the world. the birds were a replacement for the former president jammeh after he went into exile.
Normally I would list these individually but thought as I bought them all at the same antique fair.
So firstly we have a 50 Riels from Cambodia issued in 1972 and the front has fishermen fishing from a boat - one on each side of the note, while the reverse has Angkor wat temple complex.
The second note is called a guerrilla note from the Philippines. during WWII the Japanese occupied the Philippines and issued its own money but resistance fighters gathered in the different provinces and had their own underground governments and this was their currency, this note was from the Negros island and is for 10 pesos.
The third note is a 10 dalasi note from The Gambia. This note, from 1996, has the sacred ibis in the centre of the front of the note with a child on the right. The reverse has the Abuko earth satellite station
The next note is the 25 Piastres note from Sudan and it was issued in 1985. The front has a camel and the map of Sudan while the reverse has the Central bank of Sudan building.
And finally, the last two notes are from Ethiopia. The two are similar but from different dates. Both have a boy and some long horn cows on the front and the reverse has two white throated bee-eaters and the waterfall at Tisisat.
The first note is green and has the signature of Teferra Deguefe which dates it to 1976 . The second one, which is black / brown on a multi coloured background is dated at 1998. There are also differing symbols on the reverse in the far right centre.
Hot off the presses, so to speak, is this 3 notes from The Gambia all dated 2015. The first is the 20 Dalasi , which has Yahya Jammeh and a carmine bee eater on the front and government house in Banjul on the reverse.
Next is the 10 Dalasi note again with Yahya Jammeh on the front but this time with a Sacred Ibis and then the central bank building on the reverse.
Finally, the 5 Dalasi note with a giant kingfisher on the front and cattle on the reverse.
It is unusual that these new notes are still made of paper where most countries are moving to, or at least trialling polymer notes.
The Republic of Gambia is a member of the British commonwealth and is situated along a thin strip of the Gambia river. it is completely surrounded by Senegal. Its capital is Banjul. Gambia gained independence from Britain in 1968.
The note is a 1 Dalasi from around 1987 , going by the signatures. The front has President Dawda Jawara,** the first president of Gambia , with people working in the fields on the reverse and a crocodiles head as the watermark.
* Lsd was the shorthand for Pounds (L), shillings (s) and Pence(d)
President Jawara studied at the Glasgow veterinary school and his mum had the wonderful name of Mamma Fatty !!
