Somaliland is a de facto state that is not recognised by the UN but is recognised as an autonomous region of Somalia. The capital city is Hargeisa. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia at a conference in Burao , under the leadership of Abdirahman Ahmed Ali Tuur , in 1991. The war in Somalia has, for the most part not affected Somaliland.
