MONTENEGRO

Montenegro, part of the former Yugoslavia. After 1092, when the socialist federal Republic of Yugoslavia broke up, Montenegro stayed part of the new Republic of Yugoslavia but  declared itself independent in 1992. It is thought that Montenegro comes from the Venetian  "Monte Negro" meaning "black mountain". Today Montenegro is part of the Euro-zone.

The notes above are the 1, 2, 5, and 10 Perpera (Perper singular) from 1914 when Montenegro was a kingdom (1910-1918). I actually bought these thinking they were Russian, possibly from the first provisional Bolshevik government but later discovered that they were Montenegrin.
