ROMANIA







Romania is a country in central Europe. its capital city is Bucharest. Romania gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877 with King Carol I as its monarch. At the end of world war I, Transylvania, Bucovina and Bessarabia join the Kingdom of Romania. By the time of the second world war, Romania was under a far right military dictatorship and joined with Germany but in 1944, after the removal of the dictatorship, Romania swapped sides and joined the other side. At the end WWII Russian Troops occupied the area and stayed. in 1947 Romania was forcibly made a peoples republic. In 1965 Nicolae Ceausescu came to power and transformed Romania into a Socialist Republic of Romania which became one of the strictest police states in the eastern bloc.He was toppled in 1989 by the Romanian revolution.

10000 old leu = 1 new leu (changed at 2005)
1 Leu = 100 bani

The 3 notes above are all from the 1966 issue. The 100 Lei has a portrait of Nicolae Balcescu n the front and the Athenaeum in Bucharest. The 25 Lei has Tudor vladimirescu on the front and a factory on the reverse. The 10 Lei the coat of arms on the front and a harvest scene on the reverse.



This note is the 5000 Lei from 1993. it has Avram Iancu on the front and the gate at Alba Iulia on the reverse.



This one is the 1000 Lei Note from 1998, with a portrait of Mihai Eminescu, a Romanian Port, on the front and the ruined fort at Histria, the oldest known settlement in Romania, is on the reverse.



This Colourful note is the Polymer 2000 Lei from 1999.It has the solar system on the front and a map of Romania on the reverse.
