The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is a land locked country in central Asia. In 1951, the Nepali monarch ended the century long rule by hereditary kings and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established multi-party democracy with a constitutional monarchy. In 1996, an insurgency broke out led by the Maoists which led to a 10 year civil war between them and the government which led to the king taking absolute power. After mass protests, in 2008 a constitutional government was elected and promptly abolished the monarchy. The capital city is Kathmandu.  Nepal also has the highest mountain in the world, Sagarmatha more commonly called Mount Everest.
