NICARAGUA





The Republic of Nicaragua, is the biggest country in Central America. Its capital city is Managua. In 1536, the vice-royalty of New Spain was declared and then in 1821 what is now Nicaragua, became part of the first Mexican empire. Nicaragua became an independent republic in 1838. In 1979 after a revolution, the FSLN (Sandanistas) took government with the backing of large sections of the population and with the support of the catholic clergy. The Sandanistas set up a council of national reconstruction led by Daniel Ortega. Rebel groups funded and supported by the CIA called the Contras kept up a civil war over the next 5 years until the Sandanistas were defeated at the 1990 elections.

1 cordoba oro = 100 centavos (1990 - onwards)

The notes above are from the 1991 issue with Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba, the founder of Nicaragua, on the front, and the coat of arms and a flower on the reverse.



this note is from the 2007 issue and is made of polymer. The front has the castle of the immaculate conception . the reverse has the Hacienda San Jacinto
