RWANDA

The Republic of Rwanda is a central African country who's capital city is Kigali. The Berlin Conference of 1884 gave the territory to Germany as part of German East Africa. The Belgians took control during WWI and it was administered under a UN trust Territory as Ruanda-Urundi and was, in effect, part of Belgian Congo (now Congo democratic republic)  until independence in 1962. Communal infighting between the Tutsi and Hutu ethnic groups continued throughout most of the 20th century culminating in the Rwanda Genocide in 1994 where Tutsi and Hutu moderates as well as the Twa minority, were murdered by the Hutu - estimates put the deaths between 500,000 and 1 million people in 100 days. The Tutsi Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) started an offensive and retook the country by mid 1994.
