MYANMAR (BURMA)

The Socialist Republic of the Union of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a country in south east Asia, who's capital city is Rangoon. Burma finally came under british rule in 1886 after 60 years of wars between burma and the british. In 1937 , Burma became a administered colony of Britain and in 1948 became fully independent. In 1962 the military staged a coup d'etat and has been in control ever since. Its always difficult to know what to list these under as there is still disagreement over what the country should be called. i usually go with what the country's own government say so thats why its Myanmar.

Monetary unit : 1 Kyat = 100 Pyas

the 4 notes above are from the 1996 issue each with a different reverse , 20 Kyat - elephant fountain, 10 kyats - an elaborate Barge, 5 Kyats - men playing a ball game, and 1 Kyat - a canoe race.

The two notes above are the 1 Kyat from 1990 , with General Aung Sang (Father of Aung San Suu Kyi) on the front. The 50 Pyas note is from 1994 with a musical instrument on the front.

This note above, is not listed in any of my reference books, but is a 1 Kyat note from the Union of Burma Bank. It has Aung San on the front and a musical instrument on the reverse.
