MOZAMBIQUE

The Republic of Mozambique was a former colony of Portugal, which had colonised the country in the early 1500's , gained its independence in 1975 after a long guerilla war between the Portuguese and the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO).

Monetary unit:
1 Escudo = 100 centavos (1911- 1975)
1 escudo = 1 metica = 100 centimos ( 1975 - onward)

The note above is the 10000 Meticais note from 1991 with a portrait of Joaquim Chissano, the second president of Mozambique and a farmer ploughing on the reverse.

This note, although marked with the date 27 de Marco de 1961, has an overprint of the bank name, "banco de Mozambique" which makes it the first issue of the new republic and , even though it hasn't got the new date on it, it dates from 1976. the portrait on the front is of Aires de Ornelas,  governor general of Mozambique from 1896 - 1898.
