TUNISIA

The Republic of Tunisia is a North African country with a capital city of Tunis. The first conquest of Tunisia by the Ottoman empire was in 1534 and was in direct control of the country until 1705 when it installed Bey's to rule the country. In 1869 the country declared itself bankrupt and its economy was taken over by an international commission. In 1881 the French invaded and made Tunisia a French protectorate. Independence from France came in 1956 and from then until 1987 the government of Tunisia has been one of the most repressive in the Arab world. President Ben Ali took control in a bloodless coup d'etat and was re-elected until 2011 when there was a popular uprising, starting what became "the Arab spring".
