ST THOMAS AND PRINCIPLE







The Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe is an island country off the central west African coast line. It is the second smallest (after the seychelles) country in Africa. Its Capital city is Sao Tome. The Islands were discovered by Portuguese navigators around 1471, first naming the north island, Santo Antao and then changing it to Ilha do Principe (princes island) in 1502. In 1975 Sao tome and Principe became independent from Portugal .

Monetary units:
1 Escudo = 100 Centavos (1911 - 1976)
1 Dobra = 100 Centimos (1976 onwards)


The three notes above are the 1000 Dobra note and the 500 Dobra note, both from 1993 issue and have Rei Amador on the front and the 1000 Dobra note has a fruit picker on the back, whereas the 500 Dobra note has a waterfall. The 100 Dobra note is from 1989. the front is similar to the previous ones but the reverse has a picture of a group of folk making food.
