TONGA

The Kingdom of Tonga is a polynesian Island state comprising of 176 islands of which 52 are inhabited.Its capital is Nuku'alofa. it is one of the few countries that have never lost its sovereignty to the European colonial powers. In 1845, a young warrior called Taufa'ahau , united Tonga into a Kingdom. and then declared Tonga as a constitutional monarchy. from 1900 until 1970, it was a protected state under a friendship agreement with Britain. from 1970 Tonga became a member of the commonwealth of nations ( but keeping its own monarch as head of state.)

1 Pound = 20 shillings = 240 pence (UK) up to 1967
1 pa'anga = 100 seniti 1967 onwards
