ST. HELENA
The British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena is an island in the middle of the Atlantic, slightly nearer to Africa than South America. Its capital is Jamestown. St Helena is part of the British territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. The Portuguese discovered the uninhabited island in 1502. In 1658, the English East India Company fortified the island and started to colonise it. In 1815, the British chose St Helena as the place of exile for Napoleon I where he stayed until his death in 1821. 1833 saw the island become a British Crown Colony . In 1981 all British crown colonies were reclassified as British Dependent Colonies. St Helena is the Second oldest crown colony after Bermuda
Monetary unit:
1 pound = 100 pence
The note above is the £1 (pound) from 1981 featuring Queen Elizabeth II on the front and the coat of arms on the reverse. There are two similar designs for the £1 in this one the motto on the back - auspicio regis et senatus angliae ( by the command of the king and parliament of England) was spelled correctly, in the earlier 1976 version the "angliae" was mis-spelled as "anglae". The Motto was that of the East India Company.
