SUDAN
The Republic of Sudan, is a country in North Africa with a capital city of Khartoum. In the 1890's Sudan had been under the control of Egypt until a Mahdist forces tried to take control. Lord Kitchener was sent to engage the Mahdi forces and a 2 year war ensued (1896-98) which culminated in a victory for lord Kitchener. Sudan became a de facto British colony. the British had a policy of dividing up the country into a Muslim north and a Christian south.Independence was achieved on 1st January 1956. the next few decades were littered with military coup de etats and civil war within the country. South Sudan became independent in 2011.
Monetary units:
1 Sudanese pound = 100 piastres ( up until 1992 )
1 Dinar = 10 old Sudanese pounds (1992 onward)
The note above is the 100 Sudanese Pounds from 1991.It has the University of Khartoum on the front left and the Bank of Sudan building on the reverse.
