The Republic of Tartarstan is an autonimous Republic in the Russian Federation. Its capital city is Kazan. In the 19th Century Tartarstan became known as a centre of Jadidism - a Muslim movement that preached tolerance of other religions.during the civil war of 1918-20 the Tartar nationalist tried to set up an independent state but were crushed by the Bolsheviks and the Tartar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was formed.In 1990,Tartarstan declared its independence and in 1992 a referendum on the constitution passed and it was declared as a sovereign state, however it also states that it is part of the Russian Federation!!.
