500 CEDIS FROM GHANA



Here is a colourful note from Ghana. Its the 500 cedis issued in 1986. It has the coat of arms (or fist) on the front and has Cacao trees, pods annd a Ghanaian minor on the reverse.

the words "gye Nyame" on the front of the note is the name of the Akan god although most Akans identify with being christian .

Before independence Ghana was called the "Gold coast". On 6 March 1957 at 12 midnight, the Gold Coast, Ashanti, the Northern Territories and British Togoland were unified as one single independent dominion within the British Commonwealth under the name Ghana.
