MARTINIQUE



Martinique is a French overseas department with a capital city of Port de France.  It is an island in the Caribbean within the island group of the lesser Antilles. France took possession of the island in 1635 and, apart from some brief British occupations, has been a French territory ever since. in 1946, it became a French overseas department. it is the birthplace of Napoleon's empress , Josephine. The indigenous peoples of the island were the Arawaks and the Caribs

1 Franc = 100 centimes (up to 2001)
1 euro = 100 cents (2002 onwards)

The note above is the 50 Franc note from the 1947-49 issue with belain d'esnambuc, the French adventurer who established the first French colony in Martinique, on the front and a native woman on the reverse.
