Here we have 2 notes from the first part of the 20th century. The first note (top two pics) is the 1908 100 Mark note. Three issues were released at once, this one has a green serial number, one other has a red serial number and the third has Mercury, Ceres and Germania on the note.

The second note is a uniface (printed on one side only) note and it is the 2 million mark note from 1923. Right in the middle of the weirmar hyperinflation period.

POLISH 5 MAREK NOTE

Here we have a very well used 5 Marek Polish Mark) note issued in poland in 1919. This was the 3rd issue of that year. During and after the second world war Poland was administered by Austria and there were 4 currencies in circulation in Poland but none of them Polish, in 1917 they issued their own currency linked to the German mark but with the war and armed struggles after the polish currency failed and inflation went through the roof.

The note above was issued at the start of the hype inflation.the 1922-23 issue starts at 10000 marek as the lowest note.

This note has Tadeusz Kosciuszko , a military leader from the late 1700's and early 1800's on the front right of the note

I FOUND LENIN !!

Before we get to Lenin, here is a more modern Russian note - the 10000 rouble note from 1995. This was the second issue after the dissolution of the USSR on Christmas day 1991. It has the bridge over the river Yenisei at Krasnoyarsk along with the Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel . the reverse has the hydro electric dam at Kranovarsk.

And now for Lenin. Here he is on the 1 Chervonet note from 1937, 13 years after his death. The Chervonet was used as a parallel currency while the civil war was being fought in Russia and the Bolshevik government was trying to devalue the rouble. the name comes from the polish Czerwony zloty. There is some debate but this issue might have been issued to commemorate 20 years of the Bolshevik revolution !! although not very valuable, this is a note I wanted to get for a while.

ANOTHER NOTE FROM SIERRA LEONE

This is the 5000 Leones from Sierra Leone issued in 2006 with Sengbe Pieh on the front and the Bumbuna hydroelectric dam on the  reverse.

Senge Pieh, also known as Joseph Cinque, has an interesting connection to the slave trade. He led a slave revolt on the spanish ship La Amistad. he , along with the other slaves, were tried for killing the officers of the ship after it was taken into the custody of the US customs.. The Trial went all the way to the US supreme court and it was found that they had rightfully defended themselves. They were freed and Americans raised money to return them to their homes in Africa.

A NOTE THAT HAS BEEN BUGGING ME !!!!

I had this note listed under Iran-Azerbijan but I was never able to confirm what it was so it took some time but finally I have sorted it out!! It is not from Iran-azerbijan but from a predecessor of Uzbekistan, The Bukara Soviet Peoples republic.

It took a bit of detective work on my part. First of all most of the note is in Arabic script, and I don't read Arabic script but I can look up the numbers which in this case are in the corners of the top image. 20,000. however there are 3 variations of the Arabic numbers - Arabic-Turkish, Malay-Persian and Hydrabad Arabic.

On the back of the note it has the date as 1922 in western script and also 20000 in top left and bottom right corners. In the other corners was the Cyrillic script for rouble (I know this from the Russian notes) so I looked for Russian areas that had Arabic script. I didn't find the note in any of these as it was a time of great change throughout the world but especially in Russia as they formed the USSR. eventually I tried Google and struct it lucky for images of 20000 rubles. This gave me the Bukhara soviet and then was able to look it up in the standard catalogue of world paper money (specialized issues)

So, at long last, here is the 20000 rubles note from 1922 issued by the Bukhara Soviet Peoples Republic which was part of the USSR.

you can see the previous post HERE

The other note is correctly identified as the 50 Tomans note.

NOTES THAT I MISSED

These notes I received last April but for some reason I had not added them to the blog and it wasn't until I went to check if I had them while shopping online that I realised I couldn't find them.

So here we are 3 notes from Sri lanka ( formerly Ceylon ). all 3 are dated from 2010 but listed on the Central bank of Sri lanka wikipedia page as 2011.

The top note is the 20 Rupee note with the Serendib scops owl on the front, Next is the 50 rupee note with the Dull-blue flycatcher on the front and finally, the 100 rupee note with the Orange-billed Babbler on the front. All 3 have musicians and dancers in traditional dress on the reverse.

THE GAMBIA - HOT OFF THE PRESSES

Hot off the presses, so to speak, is this 3 notes from The Gambia all dated 2015. The first is the 20 Dalasi , which has  Yahya Jammeh and a carmine bee eater on the front and government house in Banjul on the reverse.

Next is the 10 Dalasi note again with Yahya Jammeh on the front but this time with a  Sacred Ibis and then the central bank building on the reverse.

Finally, the 5 Dalasi note with a giant kingfisher on the front and cattle on the reverse.

It is unusual that these new notes are still made of paper where most countries are moving to, or at least trialling polymer notes.

you can see more from The Gambia HERE

"FILLERS" AND "DOUBLERS" FROM SURINAME

These two notes from Suriname, in South America , are examples of two jargon words in collection banknotes.

The 25 Gulden is a "Filler" or a lower condition note that you have until you find an uncirculated one. This one is from 2000 and is part of a collection with flowers on the front and birds on the reverse. This one has the Cannonball tree flower and the white throated toucan on the reverse. Handy, as they have given the Latin names on the note !!

The Second note is a 10 Gulden note and is a "doubler" where you already have one and receive a second one. you can see a description and other Suriname notes HERE

NIGERIAN POLYMER NOTES

These notes are more modern versions of the Nigerian currency, the Naira. To see the other notes in the Nigerian collection see HERE and for the Biafra notes see HERE.

Next is the 10 Naira note from 2009, with Alvan Ikoku, a Nigerian educator and political activist on the front of the note.

Finally is the 5 Naira note from 2009, with Abubakar_Tafawa_Balewa Nigerian prime minister from 1960 - 66 on the front of the note.

all 3 notes are made of Polymer and have a clear window with a design instead of a watermark.
